FREAKTOWN
Here’s some designs and art directing I did on a show which I had co-created. The series didn’t turn out like I wanted due to creative differences.
This is the image that sold the show to Teletoon in 2012. It was called Sweets vs Freaks and it was great.
(NOT MY ILLUSTRATION) This is the show it became.
Ben Bones Turnaround – They really needed to change his shirt red. Never understood the need or the logic behind it.
Manny Turnaround – We always wanted Manny to talk like the Workaholics cast. We said “No generic Canadian animated show surfer dude!”, he’s now a surfer dude 🙁
Lord Cuddles – I wanted to keep his eyes all black like he is in here, made him more like a teddy bear, more adorable/cute.
Princess Booboo – Here are different designs of Booboo. In the end, they picked my least favourite.
Here are the faceshapes of the original design.
Priscilla – She kinda turned out OK.
Freaktown Sketches – Here are the first designs of Freaktown from a distance.
The studio sent me the top image which is good. I wanted to give the illustration depth and a bit more texture, I also wanted the Island to stand out more. I sent this revised (below) illustration and never heard back from them.
Some early concepts of Cuddle’s throne room.
Ben Bones’ flat
Ben’s flat ext – Earlier concept and final design.
City Hall
Early BG designs
Grossery Store EXT. – Earlier and final design (right). I thought the one on the left was fine design wise but…
Grossery Store INT.
Here are a few design notes I did.
Here are boards for an episode I did. I was suppose to direct the first three episodes, like it was stated in my contract, but the studio did everything they can to not have me there to direct. In the end, I co-directed from Vancouver in my apartment alone with as many notes as possible and sent it to Toronto where the whole studio and team was. They just did whatever they wanted, using whatever they wanted. View larger image here.
